Available Sessions
Feel free to join in any of our sessions. You can choose from any of the following classes:
Fundamentals of Drawing: Session 1
Wednesdays, January 6, 13, 20, 27, February 3, 10
3-5 pm EST / 12-2 pm PST
Fundamentals of Drawing is a six-week introductory course that introduces the processes, concepts, tools, materials, and techniques involved in creating a drawing on a two-dimensional surface. Engaging slide shows and clear demonstrations of basic drawing techniques will provide you with essential skills to enhance your creative exploration. Each week, we will focus on a different skill, culminating in a Personal Still Life Drawing that encompasses these techniques.
Week 1: Exploring Line
Wednesday, January 6, 3-5 pm EST / 12-2 pm PST
This week will focus on the many different types of line, and variety of ways to use line, to express both flat and multi-dimensional scenes. We will also experiment with various mediums to expand the textures within one drawing.
Week 2: Shading and Shapes
Wednesday, January 13, 3-5 pm EST / 12-2 pm PST
This week’s class explores how to express three dimensional objects on a flat picture plane using a gradation of shadows. We can work on various levels from simple spheres and cones to more complex ones like vases or lamps. If you have a ball, cylindrical water bottle or complex object at home, please bring it to work with.
Week 3: Negative Space
Wednesday, January 20, 3-5 pm EST / 12-2 pm PST
Negative space allows everyone to work on changing the way you see objects in relation to one another by looking at – and drawing – the space between them. This incredibly useful exercise also creates some of the most eye-catching art.
Week 4: Figure Drawing
Wednesday, January 27, 3-5 pm EST / 12-2 pm PST
Figure drawing combines line, shadow and negative space to produce highly accurate renditions of the human form. Drawing the figure helps you internalize the proportions of the figure while exploring a graceful and intricate subject.
Week 5: Geometric Perspective
Wednesday, February 3, 3-5 pm EST / 12-2 pm PST
Drawing cubes in space may sound challenging but with some simple rules and practices you will be able to accurately convey perspective. This skill will translate to drawing architecture, cityscapes or other rectilinear shapes.
Week 6: Personal Still Life Drawing
Wednesday, February 10, 3-5 pm EST / 12-2 pm PST
All the skills we have accumulated over the course of the sessions will come to play in our final project. You are invited to set up an array of objects that represent you personally and utilize techniques from line drawing to perspective to recreate that still life as a drawing. We will be working on these drawings together in class and presenting them to each other at the end.
